I came back from a military funeral this morning. San Diego is a Navy city so I get the opportunity to attend and/or participate in military funerals from time to time. This one was for the father of a man who attends my church.
You cannot sit through a military funeral and not be moved. There’s the 21 gun salute, the playing of taps and the presentation of the flag to the widow.
I was proud of Bruce, from our church, who spoke about his father. He did so in an interesting way and gave a terrific outline of how to follow Jesus Christ. And he did it all in about 5-6 minutes. I think that most preachers speak too long at funerals as though more words will somehow make more of an impact. I’m of the opposite camp. Say less but make it count. Bruce said more in fewer words than most funeral preachers say with more words.
I was also impressed with the Navy chaplain who conducted the service. I talked with him after the service- a good man who loves serving the military for Jesus.
