Dangerous Distractions

My message this coming weekend is about distractions. We all experience them and even sometimes desire them. Life would be boring if everything was predictable- we need a little excitement.

The danger is when a distraction becomes a hindrance. A couple buys a house to raise their family except the house itself becomes a distraction. They’re working longer hours to fix it up and fewer hours enjoying family life. There’s tension at home and relationships begin to unravel.

You need to have the ability to see distractions as having a potential downside and lay down some ground rules in advance that limit their impact on your life. Once you set the limit (“I’ll only spend x amount of hours doing this” or “If my spouse tells me that this has become all consuming I’ll quit”)- stop when you’ve reached it. A compromise on a limit is when the distraction has crossed over into a danger.
